Grave Robbers Missed These Tombs for 2,600 Years — Scientists Just Struck Gold

Two sealed Etruscan tombs discovered only metres apart at the San Giuliano necropolis in central Italy survived roughly 2,600 years without being emptied by looters. The latest chamber was opened on June 9, 2026, after an equally rare intact find in 2025.

The “gold” is scientific rather than necessarily literal. Because the remains, pottery, weapons and personal objects stayed in their original positions, archaeologists can reconstruct burial rituals that disturbed tombs usually erase.
