Underwater Volcano Is Erupting — but Scientists Don’t Know What’s Happening

Satellites have spotted something dramatic in the Bismarck Sea near Papua New Guinea: signs of a submarine volcanic eruption unfolding beneath the ocean surface. From space, researchers can see clues such as discoloured water, volcanic plumes, pumice, and heat signals — but the seafloor itself remains frustratingly out of reach.

That is what makes this eruption so fascinating. Scientists know something is happening, and they can track its surface effects, but they do not yet know the exact shape, size, location, or impact of the eruption on the ocean floor. NASA says the eruption was first detected on May 8, 2026, but the area lacks high-resolution seafloor maps, leaving researchers with more questions than answers.
