Scientists Identify World’s Largest Known Scorpion — the Size of a Dog

The idea of a dog-sized scorpion sounds like something built for a nightmare, but this discovery comes from fossils that have been sitting in scientific collections for generations. Researchers have now re-examined those fragments and confirmed that they belong to Praearcturus gigas, a giant ancient scorpion from what is now Britain.

The animal lived around 415 million years ago, during the Early Devonian, when life on land was still limited and the first land ecosystems were only beginning to develop. That timing makes the discovery more than a size record; it changes how scientists understand early predators, early land life, and the strange world that existed before forests.
