Britain has approved its first oral GLP-1 medicine specifically for weight loss, offering an alternative for eligible patients who do not want to use injections. The Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency authorised Novo Nordisk’s Wegovy tablet on June 11, 2026, after assessing its safety, quality and effectiveness.

However, the tablets have been approved rather than fully launched for sale, and the widely reported £5-a-day figure is not a confirmed UK retail price. Availability, private prescribing costs and any future NHS access will depend on separate decisions and commercial arrangements.
