Some UK universities could lose the right to recruit international students under tougher Home Office rules aimed at visa abuse. The plan, published on June 4, 2026, would target institutions where too many sponsored students fail to enrol, drop out, or have visa applications refused.
The move comes after Home Office data showed 10,835 people who entered the UK on study visas later claimed asylum in the year to March 2026. The government says it wants to protect the student route, while universities warn that blunt restrictions could harm genuine applicants and already fragile university finances.
