The idea that a city could “disappear” by 2030 sounds dramatic, but it needs careful wording. In most cases, scientists and climate mapping projects are not saying an entire city will vanish from the map. They are warning that major areas could fall below future tide lines, face repeated flooding, or become much harder to protect without stronger adaptation.
Time Out’s list is based on Climate Central maps using IPCC 2021 climate data. The maps show future tide lines under continued global heating, but they do not include every extreme flood, storm surge, defence upgrade, or local adaptation measure. That means the risk is serious, but not identical in every city. Some places face sinking land, others rising seas, stronger storms, river flooding, or all of them together.
