A familiar British seaside tradition has ended at Coney Beach in Porthcawl, South Wales, after more than a century. The Bateman family, whose donkey-riding business operated there for generations, has been told it can no longer offer seasonal rides on the sand.

The change was not introduced through a rule targeting donkey rides alone. Bridgend County Borough Council extended its summer dog restrictions to cover nearly all animals, making it impossible to issue the licence the family needs between May and September.
