A Giant Squid Longer Than a School Bus Rises From 1,500 Feet in Rare Sighting

The giant squid has always lived in the uncomfortable space between science and sea legend. It is real, documented, and studied, yet so rarely seen alive that every new trace of it feels like the ocean briefly letting something enormous slip through.

This latest discovery off Western Australia’s Nyinggulu, or Ningaloo, coast is not just another dramatic deep-sea headline. Researchers found evidence of giant squid in deep underwater canyons using environmental DNA, or eDNA, placing one of the ocean’s most elusive animals inside a much larger story about how little we still know beneath the surface.
