A strange yellow glass buried with King Tutankhamun has always looked like something from another world. It was not made by Egyptian craftsmen, formed in a kiln, or carved from an ordinary gemstone, yet it became part of one of the most famous treasures ever found in a royal tomb.
The material is Libyan Desert Glass, found in western Egypt near the Libyan border and formed around 29 million years ago during an extreme cosmic event. A new study has now identified a tiny dendritic zircon inclusion inside the glass, giving scientists fresh clues about the violent temperatures involved — while leaving the biggest origin question still open.
