The headline sounds like something from an adventure film: a hidden ancient “city” discovered at the bottom of the ocean. But the real story is even more fascinating when stripped of exaggeration. Scientists have not confirmed a lost city with streets, buildings, or monuments. What they have found is evidence of an ancient submerged world off the coast of Java, Indonesia, where Homo erectus once lived around 140,000 years ago.
The discovery comes from the Madura Strait, where dredging work recovered two Homo erectus skull fragments along with thousands of animal fossils. These remains came from a drowned landscape that was once part of Sundaland, a vast prehistoric landmass connecting parts of Southeast Asia before rising seas covered it.
