Decision to Leave by Boat

Toffolo said the family decided to leave after noticing smoke in the air and ash beginning to fall around them.

She recalled that James Watt became increasingly concerned as conditions deteriorated and suggested they leave immediately rather than wait for official evacuation orders.

Because the main road connecting Cap Ferret to the mainland had already been closed due to the advancing fire, the family evacuated by boat before spending the night at an airport ahead of their scheduled flight the following morning.
