Full List of Vehicles Banned From the UK Motorway Outside Lane

The outside lane of a motorway is often treated as the “fast lane,” but that is not what UK motorway rules say. Official guidance is clear: drivers should keep left unless overtaking, and the right-hand lane has extra restrictions for certain vehicles.

The rule that matters here is Highway Code Rule 265. It applies to motorways with three or more lanes in the same direction, where specific vehicles must not use the right-hand lane except in prescribed circumstances.
