Claims that domestic air conditioning is banned in Britain have spread online during the summer heat. The Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government has rejected them, confirming that air con can be installed in both existing and newly built homes.

That does not mean every system can be fitted anywhere without approval. The rules depend on the technology, property type, location and UK nation, while noise, lease terms and refrigerant regulations can create additional restrictions.
