Pet owners have been warned not to treat cats and dogs with ordinary human medicines unless a veterinary professional has specifically prescribed the drug and dose. The latest warning highlighted ibuprofen and paracetamol, two familiar painkillers that can cause severe poisoning when owners rely on online advice or assume a human dose can be adjusted safely for an animal.
The risk extends beyond painkillers. Antidepressants, cold remedies, sleeping tablets, stimulants, heart drugs, and other common prescriptions can damage a pet’s stomach, kidneys, liver, nervous system, or heart. Veterinary poison specialists say human medicines are among the substances most frequently involved in accidental pet exposures.
