The most dangerous planet for Earth may not be one that already exists in our solar system, but one that could have existed in the wrong place. A University of California Riverside experiment explored what might happen if a “super-Earth” sat between Mars and Jupiter, filling the large gap where the asteroid belt is now.
The answer was unsettling. The study did not suggest that a hidden planet is currently approaching Earth, or that life is in immediate danger. Instead, it showed how delicate the solar system’s balance really is. A planet placed in the wrong orbit could disturb Jupiter, reshape Earth’s path, and potentially make our world uninhabitable.
