For more than a decade, GJ 504 b appeared to be an unusually cold, pinkish giant orbiting a Sun-like star roughly 57 light-years away. New James Webb Space Telescope observations have now made the object considerably stranger rather than neatly explaining it.

A team led by Aneesh Baburaj of Northwestern University obtained the first detailed direct spectrum of the companion, revealing unexpected clouds, complex chemistry and a mass that makes even its basic identity difficult to settle.
