Britain’s next banknotes could look very different, with the Bank of England asking the public to help choose UK wildlife for a new series of £5, £10, £20 and £50 notes. The shortlist was published on June 3, 2026, and includes animals from land, sea, rivers, skies and gardens.

The change is not simply decorative. The Bank says the new designs are part of a wider update intended to improve counterfeit resilience, accessibility and recognition, while keeping the monarch’s portrait on future notes. The public consultation runs until 11.59pm BST on Friday, July 3, 2026.
