Earth has one permanent moon, but it may not be alone in the way people usually imagine. New research suggests that at any given time, several tiny objects may be temporarily moving around Earth before drifting away again. These are often called “minimoons,” though they are not stable, glowing companions in the night sky like the Moon we know.
The idea is surprising because these objects are small, fast, and extremely difficult to detect. According to reporting on the study, researchers estimate that around 6.5 lunar-born temporary satellites may be circling Earth at a time, though the uncertainty is very large. In simple terms, Earth may have more than six hidden mini-moons at once, but they are brief visitors rather than permanent neighbors.
