British tourists visiting Mediterranean beaches have been warned about the silver-cheeked pufferfish as sightings rise in Greek waters. The concern follows first-aid guidance from the Hellenic Red Cross and a reported bite near Varkiza, outside Athens.
The fish presents two different hazards: powerful jaws capable of causing serious wounds, and tetrodotoxin that can be fatal if the animal is eaten. The real risk becomes clearer once those dangers are separated.
