Former British government minister and Reform UK politician Ann Widdecombe was struck 21 times on the head with a hammer during a fatal attack at her home in southwest England, prosecutors told a London court on Tuesday as murder proceedings against the suspect began.

According to prosecutors, the 78-year-old politician was eating lunch in her kitchen on July 8 when a man allegedly entered her home through the open front door carrying a hammer CCTV footage from inside the property reportedly captured the incident, which prosecutors described as lasting only about two minutes.

Joshua Kerry, 28, from Rotherham in northern England, has been charged with Widdecombe"s murder. During his appearance before Westminster Magistrates" Court, he confirmed his identity but was not asked to enter a plea. The case has now been referred to London"s Central Criminal Court, commonly known as the Old Bailey, where further hearings are scheduled later this year. Authorities have also confirmed that investigations into the suspect"s possible motive, including whether there was any political or terrorist connection, are continuing.

Prosecutor Kashif Malik told the court that Kerry allegedly parked near Widdecombe"s home before entering through the unlocked front door. Once inside, he is said to have approached the kitchen where Widdecombe was having lunch. Prosecutors allege that the suspect asked her about bank cards and identification before repeatedly striking her with a hammer.

The court heard that after the alleged attack, the suspect removed Widdecombe"s wallet before leaving the property. Prosecutors said CCTV footage showed him spending approximately two minutes inside the house before driving away.

Widdecombe"s death was discovered the following day after she failed to appear for a scheduled television interview. Concerned by her absence, her personal assistant contacted her gardener, who went to check on her and found her lying on the kitchen floor. Emergency services later confirmed her death, with preliminary post-mortem findings identifying blunt-force head trauma as the provisional cause.

Police arrested Kerry three days later in South Yorkshire, more than 250 miles from the scene of the attack. He remains in custody while criminal proceedings continue.

The Crown Prosecution Service confirmed that it had authorized the murder charge following an investigation led by Counter Terrorism Policing and Devon and Cornwall Police. Prosecutors emphasized that inquiries into the defendant"s motive remain ongoing and reminded the public that criminal proceedings are active, meaning the suspect is entitled to a fair trial.

Widdecombe was a well-known figure in British politics. She served as a Conservative Member of Parliament from 1987 until 2010 and held ministerial positions during John Major"s government. In recent years, she became associated with Reform UK and remained an outspoken commentator on immigration, Brexit, and social issues. Beyond politics, she gained wider public recognition through television appearances, including participation in Strictly Come Dancing and Celebrity Big Brother.

News of her death has prompted tributes from politicians across the political spectrum, many describing the killing as a shocking act of violence regardless of political differences. The incident has also renewed concerns about the safety of public figures in the United Kingdom following previous attacks on elected officials, including the murders of MPs Jo Cox in 2016 and Sir David Amess in 2021.

As investigations continue, police have not announced a definitive motive for the attack. Detectives are examining evidence gathered from CCTV footage, forensic examinations, and witness interviews while also exploring whether the suspect specifically targeted Widdecombe because of her public profile or political activities.

The next hearings in the case are expected later this year, while a provisional trial date has been scheduled for 2027. Until then, prosecutors have urged the public to avoid speculation that could prejudice the ongoing legal proceedings.
