UK Seaside Town Struggles as Local Businesses Close Their Doors

Gosport has the kind of setting many towns would envy: beaches, historic architecture, a waterfront identity, and a long connection with the Royal Navy. But behind that familiar seaside image, residents describe a town trying to hold on to young people, local jobs, and a high street that no longer feels as busy as it once did.

The Hampshire town, home to around 80,000 people, was forecast by the Office for National Statistics to see the largest population decline of any local authority in England between 2025 and 2035, with numbers expected to fall by 2.1%. Residents point to lost employers, weak transport links, fewer youth spaces, and a local economy still searching for its next chapter.
