New Dangerous Dog Breed ‘Ban’ Rule Announced by Government in June

A new dangerous dog rule announced by the UK Government in June does not create a fresh breed ban from scratch. Instead, it adds a tighter child-safety condition for people legally keeping banned dog types, including XL Bully dogs, under exemption rules in England and Wales.

From November 1, 2026, owners must not leave a child under 12 in close contact with an XL Bully or another banned dog in a private place, such as a home or garden, without adult supervision. The Department for Environment, Food & Rural Affairs introduced the measure to Parliament on June 9, 2026, saying it is designed to strengthen protection around banned breeds.
