Home education in Britain is no longer just a niche choice made by families who want a different lifestyle. In England, the official term is elective home education, and the latest Department for Education data shows a clear rise: 126,000 children were recorded as being home educated on census day in autumn 2025, up from 111,700 in autumn 2024.
The deeper story is not simply that more parents want to teach at the kitchen table. The data points to a mix of pressure, preference, anxiety, school dissatisfaction, and unmet needs. Mental health was the most reported known reason in autumn 2025, while almost three in ten cases were recorded as unknown or not provided to the local authority.
