Instant coffee is one of the easiest habits in the kitchen: fast, cheap, familiar, and built into millions of daily routines. But a recent study has put that convenience under new scrutiny after linking it to a higher risk of dry age-related macular degeneration.
The condition, known as AMD, affects central vision and can make reading, driving, watching TV, or recognising faces difficult. The NHS says AMD does not usually cause total blindness, but it can seriously damage central sight, and the latest research points specifically to instant coffee rather than ground or decaffeinated coffee.
