Your feet can sometimes reveal more than simple tiredness. Swelling in the feet or ankles may appear after standing for too long, eating too much salt, travelling, or wearing tight shoes. In many cases, it is temporary and improves with rest, movement, or elevation.
But persistent, sudden, painful, or unexplained swelling can also point to deeper health problems. The symptom is known as edema, which means fluid has built up in body tissues. Mayo Clinic notes that edema commonly appears in the legs and feet and can be linked to conditions such as congestive heart failure, kidney disease, venous insufficiency, or cirrhosis of the liver.
